The Mitsubishi FX2N-16EX-ES/UL is a 16-point digital input expansion block for the MELSEC FX series PLCs (compatible with FX1N, FX2N, FX3G, and FX3U). This unit is used to increase the number of sensors or switches a PLC can monitor without replacing the entire base CPU.
The “ES/UL” designation is crucial—it indicates that the module is designed for the European and North American markets, featuring Sink/Source flexibility and compliance with UL safety standards.
1. Key Technical Specifications
| Feature | Details |
| Input Points | 16 Channels |
| Input Voltage | 24V DC (+10% / -15%) |
| Input Current | 5mA (typical) |
| Input Type | Sink or Source (Bi-directional) |
| Connection | Removable screw terminal block |
| Isolation | Photo-coupler isolation between internal logic and field |
2. Sinking vs. Sourcing (Wiring)
The “ES” version is highly versatile because of the S/S (Sink/Source) terminal. Depending on how you wire this single terminal, the entire block changes its logic:
-
Sinking Configuration (NPN): Connect the S/S terminal to 24V (+). Your sensors must then switch the 0V (-) to the input terminals.
-
Sourcing Configuration (PNP): Connect the S/S terminal to 0V (-). Your sensors must then switch the 24V (+) to the input terminals.
3. Addressing in the PLC
When you snap this module onto the right side of an FX-series PLC, the CPU automatically assigns it the next available addresses.
-
If your base unit ends at X27, this module will start at X30 (Note: Mitsubishi uses octal numbering, so there are no 8s or 9s in the addresses).
-
The 16 inputs are typically labeled in two groups: X0–X7 and X10–X17 (relative to the module’s start address).
