The Mitsubishi FX3U-48MT/ESS is a high-performance base PLC unit from the MELSEC FX3U series. It is widely considered the “gold standard” of the FX family because it bridges the gap between simple micro-controllers and powerful modular PLCs.
The “ESS” suffix is the most important part of this model number for a technician: it signifies that the outputs are Source-type Transistors (typically for the European and North American markets), as opposed to the “MT/DS” (Sinking) models.
1. Key Technical Specifications
| Feature | Details |
| Total I/O | 48 Points (24 Inputs / 24 Outputs) |
| Power Supply | 100–240V AC |
| Input Type | 24V DC (Sink/Source selectable) |
| Output Type | Transistor (Source) |
| Output Rating | 0.5A per point (5V to 30V DC) |
| High-Speed Counters | Up to 100 kHz (6 points) |
| Positioning Outputs | 3-Axis independent (up to 100 kHz) |
2. Understanding the “ESS” Output Logic
Since this is an ESS model, the outputs use Sourcing logic.
-
When an output (e.g., Y0) turns ON, the PLC “pushes” +24V DC out of that terminal.
-
Your load (solenoid, relay, or signal light) must have its other side connected to 0V (Common).
-
This is safer for many industrial standards because a short circuit to the machine’s grounded frame will blow a fuse rather than accidentally energizing the device.
3. High-Speed Capabilities
The FX3U is famous for its motion control abilities. With the MT (Transistor) version, you can perform:
-
Pulse Train Output (PTO): Drive stepper motors or servo drives directly from the base unit using instructions like
PLSYorDRVI. -
PWM: Control heating elements or DC motors via Pulse Width Modulation.
-
Note: You cannot do high-speed pulse positioning with the “MR” (Relay) version; only this “MT” version supports it.
